Uncharted 4 (PS4) - Why the multiplayer mode deserves more credit.

I'd like to honour one of the PlayStation Plus monthly games for April, and it's none other than Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Right off the bat, I think it's been pretty heavily noted that most people tend to pick up the game for its single-player campaign, leaving them critical of the multiplayer mode and how it may be "loosely" connected to the story mode or lost its relevance. But I beg to differ. The version still remains a fast and frantic online third-person shooter game which separates the realism and grit of the story mode, leaving its players with a more relaxed, yet fun-for-all experience.

Let's hop right into the details:

GAMEPLAY

  • King of the Hill allows you to compete with the opposing team to capture a zone or "hill" and control it in order to gain victory points. The longer you protect your territory, the higher your team scores.

  • Ranked King of the Hill works similarly but however, contains the incentive of ranked grade evaluations based off your placement and depends on how well you advance through the ranks such as silver, gold, platinum and so on.

  • Bounty Hunter calls for two competing teams to reach a score limit first by collecting bounties from KO'd enemies, with one random player assigned the role of "captain" - a highly valuable target.

  • Team Deathmatch stands as my personal favourite, where players are randomly assigned to a match of heroes vs. villains and the team which scores a total of 40 kills first takes the win.

  • Classic Mode runs similarly and is a more basic version that focuses on combat and movement, without additional features such as the in-match store, mysticals, sidekicks and so on.

  • Command mode seeks for players to seize three "command sites" to gain points. The team must KO enemies in contested zones in order to capture the sites faster and the player with the most contributions earns the title of "captain".

  • Plunder mode requires players to work as allies to capture and bring an idol back to the team's base.

MULTIPLAYER STORE AND CUSTOMIZATION

The multiplayer store allows for players to purchase from a vast array of weaponry, characters and their customization features such as skins, outfits, taunts and so on. There also exists the feature of bundles and chests which can be purchased with uncharted points and relics, allowing players to unlock random sets of boosters, mysticals and premium weapons, as well as vanity items such as hats and face wear.

VERDICT

  • It is appreciable how the game strays away from traditional shooter games and adds an element of creativity through customization features.

  • Great game mechanics allowing for the game to control smoothly with a vast array of maps, challenges and so on.

  • It should be noted that matchmaking is not as hard as it has seemed over years but rather that the community of players is what has held its relevance for a long time.

  • I personally believe that the developers have kept it fresh and that the game does deserve a chance from those who may be skeptical of it. It has certainly proved to get addictive and fun getting the hang of it.
